Art collectors and interior designers were captivated by the subtle enchantment of these gently painted maps, which led to a growing demand for restored and painted historic maps across the country. The historical map collection soon evolved into custom map services for private estates, resorts, lakes, public lands, and regional attractions—all showcasing the vintage charm of earlier works, incorporating borders, cartouches, and fonts inspired by historic maps from the 1850s and earlier. Each piece of art produced by Great River Arts is the result of a collaborative process involving cartographers, architects, colorists, and professional researchers. With a passion for exploration and creativity, the team continues to create original works, actively pursuing new map suggestions and collaborations while working from the road and a home base near Glacier National Park, Montana. Great River Arts remains committed to crafting timeless map art and sharing its journey with audiences everywhere. About the Driftless Region Map: The unglaciated region of western Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, northwestern Illinois, and southeastern Minnesota is a natural and beautifully sculpted landscape that is known as the Driftless Area. The area is considered “Driftless” because it was not shaped by the movement of glaciers thousands of years ago. A part of the attraction to the region is the forested hillsides that extend into deeply carved river valleys that cut into limestone bedrocks. A key feature that makes the Driftless Area a unique place is the Baraboo Range, comprising of a collection of monadnocks- huge masses of rock rising up out of the middle of a plateau. The Driftless Area is a strange combination of plateau, deep river gorges, sinkholes, bluffs, and monadnocks. The Driftless Area covers about 20,000 square miles, which primarily extends into western Wisconsin-roughly 85 percent. The landscape has plenty of caves, notably Viroqua City Cave and Cave of the Mounds, and the most rugged part of Driftless Wisconsin is the Ocooch Mountains. In southeastern Minnesota the Driftless Area begins at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. This region is defined by vegetation of mixed woodland, goat prairies, and old plateau covered by loess. The Minnesota River cuts across the Driftless Area. In Driftless Iowa the landscape is of forested valleys, streams, rivers, and majestic limestone bluffs. In Illinois, rolling hills and wooded ridges, and features such canyons, ravines, bluffs makes up its portion of the Driftless Area. The Driftless Area’s forests, prairies, wetlands, and grasslands provides ideal habitat for wildflowers and wildlife. Farming continues to be an activity that thrives in the Driftless Area. Unique soil conditions and higher elevations are ideal for growing particular crops. Amish farmers have long situated themselves in the region, but a new breed of organic farmers has emerged in Driftless. Wisconsin in particular, has expanded into a hotbed of organic farming. The Driftless Region is also ripe for fishing for a variety of trout including brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout. Whitetail deer and wild turkey, ring-necked pheasant, along with other games such as ducks and geese, grouse, quail, mourning dove, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, fox, and coyote can all be hunted in specific portions of the Driftless Area. Due to nature of our product line the exact sizes may vary!

This River Meander, Mississippi River map print is a giclee reproduction and features the ancient courses of the Mississippi River created by cartographer and geologist Harold Fisk for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in 1944. Each of the fifteen plates depicts a different portion of the Mississippi River and its various courses over time between Cape Girardeau, MO and Donaldsonville, LA. This is Plate 22, Sheet 1 and features the area from Cape Girardeau, MO & Cairo, IL (top of map) to the western portion of Carlisle County in Kentucky (bottom of map). The third image you see above is all fifteen of the maps in this series superimposed over a map of the US. These maps are incredibly detailed, so if you’re trying to locate a specific area, just send me a quick message and I’ll get back to you quickly. While these prints are from yesteryear, we’ve remastered them with the touch ups necessary to restore them to their original glory as much as possible without losing the vintage nature of the artwork. We will be adding all fifteen of these stunning maps, so be sure to check back with us often. ABOUT HAROLD FISK:In 1944, Harold Fisk had been following ghosts for three years. His ghosts were of the meandering Mississippi. A river, big or small, doesn’t stay still as its waters flow it carves out new paths in a route towards its ultimate destination. Over time, the bends and curves of what seems like a static river snakes into new outlines. By looking at the geologic evidence, you can even map many of the paths a river once took like looking at the past lives of the waters, the river’s ghosts. In a report for the US Army Corps of Engineers, in 1944 Fisk had completed a mammoth effort entitled, ?Geological Investigation of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River. It was his best attempt at tracking the meanderings of the Mississippi?s present and past bends, visualized as gorgeous maps. Of course, mapping over 2,000 miles of river and its previous structure based on the available physical evidence is a tall order (though Fisk completed the project in three years), so many of the colorful curves in Fisk’s maps are a combination of speculation, interpretation, and extrapolation. Nevertheless, his maps are an incredible visualization of a living river.
