Add a touch of elegance to your living space with this beautiful Chandelette! It is a glass crystal pendant suncatcher made using 1.5 inch (38 mm) stunning Asfour leaded glass Aurora Borealis one side coated prisms made in Egypt. Handmade with care, this custom piece measures approximately 5.25 inches in height and 5.75 inches in width. Its AB coated clear color adds a classic touch to any room, making it a perfect decorative accessory for your home. It is somewhat difficult to find good cleaning instructions for AB coated pieces. I have used both ammonia based chandelier cleaner and dish soap with water, followed up by gentle swabbing with a clean microfiber cloth, and those do not seem to do any damage, but that is not guaranteed. Doing your own research may help. At any rate, the coating can be worn off over time, so I would recommend the minimum possible abrasion or scrubbing that will get the job done. You will need a place to hang this pendant, preferably where there is a strongly concentrated light source nearby and overhead or behind it, as it does not contain its own light source. Please see discussion at the end of this description for more details. I plan to eventually sell a wire stand designed to work with these Chandelettes, as well as other Chandelette types not currently listed.Pictures may not be of the exact Chandelette you will receive, though they will be of the exact same type as noted in this description and pictures. Slight cosmetic imperfections are a natural result of these being handmade. Pieces may not line up exactly perfectly nor have the exact same lengths and curvatures, though they will be close. Bails may not match each other perfectly. Additionally, there may be tiny imperfections in the crystal prisms, such as a small number of minor flea bites and/or a cloudy crack defect that runs from the hanging hole to the top of the piece (see pictures), unless the Chandelette is being sold as one that is free of such crystal defects, which will be plainly stated in the description and title.From the factory, a certain percentage of these prisms have the cloudy crack defect, so allowing the defect reduces the cost of the Chandelette versus making one without the defect. Nevertheless, after working with over a thousand of these prisms I have never once seen this crack become any kind of a structural problem. It is quite unlikely to do so, because the crack always ends at the rounded hanging hole. From a beauty perspective, the crack makes nearly zero difference unless the Chandelette will be regularly observed up close. It is made of reasonably inert components and thus can be used outdoors. It will probably require more frequent cleaning. I would not recommend extended use outdoors in areas subject to salt spray or salt from roads. Sunlight is no problem. From my experience Asfour pieces do not have the tendency to yellow under direct sunlight the way some cheaper prisms will.If your Chandelette should become deformed or bent, it is possible to carefully rebend the wires, despite the fact they are made of a medium hard stainless steel. Gentle curves are best. Avoid repeatedly bending the wires sharply as this greatly increases the chance of the wires or the crystals breaking. Seller assumes no responsibility if damage is incurred because Chandelette is reformed into a new shape for whatever reason.The crystal pieces are made of glass, so please be careful not to drop the Chandelette. If pieces become broken, do not touch the broken pieces with bare fingers as they can be extremely sharp. Sweep them up into a thick paper towel or similar and secure this in a small bag or some other safe manner for disposal. Seller is not able to provide replacement pieces if any become broken, due to the logistical nightmare this would create. However they are standard Asfour 401-38 AB and 701-20 AB parts which are readily available all over the Internet. The small loops securing each prism’s bail will be difficult to unbend and rebend, so I would recommend carefully spreading the bail with small needlenose pliers, then carefully closing it over the replacement prism.Please note that this product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm, as indicated in the California Prop 65 Warning. This does not mean the lead is easily freed from the crystal pieces, it normally isn’t. But be aware it is in there. Washing of hands after handling the prisms and before eating, smoking, or drinking is recommended.A note on where to hang your Chandelette and how to light it:Hang your Chandelette where it will receive bright light at least some of the time. Small and intense light sources work best, which is why the direct Sun works so well. Diffused lights (like 4 foot ceiling puff fixtures or even 12 inch circles), will work poorly for producing fire or sparkle. Even a standard frosted light bulb is not very good compared to one where the filament shows, and even then, the effect is better if the filament is as small as possible for the same amount of light.Fire is defined as the eye directly seeing the dispersion (separation) by the prisms of the white light source into its colors. This happens because different colors are bent different amounts while passing through the prism. This effect is often enhanced if the two eyes happen to see different colors from each other coming from the same prism, or even the same part of the same prism, when the light source(s) and prism facets line up just right. Sparkle is the light reflecting off the prism facets without being separated into its colors. For these things to happen it doesn’t matter if the prism is real crystal like diamond or quartz, or glass «crystal» as used here. Diamond does the job better, but the important thing is that the colors are being separated. Although the spreading of the colors always happens regardless of light source size, with the bigger light fixtures most of the colors being separated wind up overlapping with other colors generated by the part of the light source right next to the part that is being observed. This causes the colors to add back up to white except at the edges of the light source, where one edge will often appear orangey and the other bluish. A point light source is so small that by the time the angle of light hitting the eyes moves over a little bit to where the colors would start blending, there already isn’t any more light source over there so the eye only sees the narrow band of colors that lines up with where the light source actually is. And such tiny light sources usually have a much higher brightness within this small area than a bigger light that has a lot more area to get its light out. So the already better separated colors are also far brighter.Moving the light source(s) farther away improves the fire (because the light source looks smaller at the Chandelette’s distance) but this causes a rapid drop in light intensity, so a happy medium should be found if the light is movable. Reflector spotlights can be used to great effect to increase light intensity at a distance, though once again a spotlight with the smallest possible reflector, optic, or lens size would work the best. If you’ve ever been inside certain crystal selling stores in the mall, you may have noticed they use a goodly number of tiny spotlights above their pendant crystal displays, for exactly these reasons.The other thing that greatly helps fire and sparkle is to keep the crystal pieces reasonably clean. When they become cloudy or dusty the sparkle and fire are much reduced. If the light source is strong enough this might not be noticed for a long time, but just try cleaning a very dirty crystal chandelier, or even pendant prism, and watch what happens!For Aurora Borealis (AB) or other similar coated crystals, the quality of the fire can matter less. The colored reflections become more important and are responsible for more of the piece’s lustre, especially for pieces coated on both (or all) sides.The above discussion is valid regardless if the light source is incandescent, LED, or other white light technology. Better quality light sources, like high color rendering types, will produce a better range of colors in the fire. These have become readily available in LED versions in a wide selection between warm white and daylight, and in some smaller filament sizes. However, for creating fire it’s (sadly) still hard to beat a 60W incandescent chandelier bulb for brightness combined with small filament size.
