The CROSS represents the Catholic Priests that removed children from their families, placed them in indian schools, cut their hair, forbid them to speak their language and assigned them numbers instead of names. These were the first steps leading to the demise of Native American People. RED represents the 300 woman and children who were massacred at Wounded Knee, in December of 1880. The title “BROKEN PROMISES” refers to all the treaties between the U.S. Government and Native People that were later broken by the U.S. Government. “BROKEN DREAMS” refers to the hope for well-being and safety for themselves and their children which have become unattainable for many Native American families.
